轉輪除濕機的核心部件是一個蜂窩狀轉輪，轉輪由特殊陶瓷纖維載體和活性硅膠復合而成；轉輪兩側由特制的密封裝置分成兩個區域：處理區域及再生區域；當需要除濕的潮濕空氣通過轉輪的處理區域時，濕空氣的水蒸汽被轉輪的活性硅膠所吸附，干燥空氣被處理風機送至需要處理的空間；而不斷緩慢轉動的轉輪載著趨于飽和的水蒸汽進入再生區域；再生區內反向吹入的高溫空氣使得轉輪中吸附的水份被脫附，被風機排出室外，從而使轉輪恢復了吸濕的能力而完成再生過程；轉輪不斷地轉動，上述的除濕及再生周而復始地進行，從而保證除濕機持續穩定的除濕狀態。
空氣中的水分子被硅膠微孔中的親水性基團吸收，另外微孔中的毛細管結構凝結也會吸收大量水分子。
加熱后的空氣進入再生區使其溫度升高，微孔中吸附的水分子被激活，吸附能力變弱，水分子從硅膠微孔中排出。

The heated air enters the regeneration zone to increase its temperature, the water molecules adsorbed in the micropores are activated, the adsorption capacity becomes weaker, and the water molecules are discharged from the microporous silica gel.
